THE Friends of Ilkley Moor are helping to plant 25,000 Sphagnum Moss plug plants on Ilkley Moor’s peatland in February and March 2024.

This is an initial part of a three year Ilkley Moor Resilience Project being led by Bradford Countryside Services and the Moors for the Future partnership.

The restoration of the peatland will aid carbon sequestration, help reduce the risk of flooding in the valley, aid in water storage, reduce wildfires and increase water quality. There is a particular local need for these solutions to reduce the risk of wildfires on the Moor, and the flooding in Ilkley itself.

Volunteer days to plant Sphagnum Moss will take place on March 5th and 19th from 10am until 1pm.

The more volunteers available the easier this essential task becomes.

For further information on the project or to take part in the planting, contact Tracy Gray, tracy@ilkleymoor.org

As well as helping restore the peatland, people will learn about the biodiversity of this important habitat and how the presence of sphagnum moss benefits the locality.

Volunteer days to help with this have been made possible with support provided to the Friends of Ilkley Moor from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery players.

Look out for informative events on peatlands in the Friends of Ilkley Moor 2024 Events and Learning programme which will be published in March. Copies will be available at the Ilkley Visitor Centre and published on the FOIM website https://www.ilkleymoor.org .Membership details to support these activities are also available on this website.
